Yale Cruises Past Sacred Heart 4-1

September 10, 2013

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Peter Jacobson has enjoyed success against Sacred Heart throughout his career. He took it to a new level on Tuesday at Campus Field. Jacobson scored three goals and added an assist as Yale cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Pioneers.

Jacobson, a senior, scored at least once in each of his four games against Sacred Heart. He is the first Yale player to record a hat trick since Alex Munns ’07 tallied three times in a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart in 2004.

“Peter was outstanding,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “He scored three very different goals. It shows the value of his experience.”

Two Yale freshmen also had days to remember. Cameron Kirdzik scored his first career goal, while Henry Albrecht tallied his first career point, assisting on Jacobson’s first goal.

The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime, but the Bulldogs erupted for three goals in a 6 minute, 38 second stretch midway through the second half.

Jacobson scored the first one on a penalty kick after being fouled in the box at 65:21. Less than a minute later, the Bulldogs struck again. This time, Jacobson played a cross to Kirdzik, who one-timed it past SHU goalkeeper Dylan Strachan. Jacobson capped the scoring at 71:59 when he one-timed a Jenner Fox cross into the back of the net.

“It’s great to grind out a victory on the road,” Tompkins said. “We were able to get a lot of guys into the game, which should be good for our confidence moving forward.”

In all, 20 different players saw action for the Bulldogs (1-1).

Yale had the better of the play early and jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jacobson headed in Albrecht’s free kick at 20:05.

The Pioneers, though, tied it late in the opening period when Kieran Walsh scored on a long free kick.

Goalkeeper Blake Brown made three saves to post the victory for the Bulldogs.

Yale outshot the Pioneers 15-6.

Sacred Heart (2-4) was playing its second straight Ivy League opponent. The Pioneers dropped a 5-0 decision at Penn on Sunday.

After playing their first two games on the road, the Bulldogs have their home opener on Friday when they host Fairfield at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
