NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale turned in one of its most complete performances of the season in a 3-1 win over Saint Joseph’s on a gorgeous early November night at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs finished their scoring chances and were stingy on defense in cruising to a victory in their final non-conference game of the season.

“This was an excellent performance overall, and I'm really happy for our guys to get another win,” said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “They earned this tonight. We have a goal of moving this program forward, and I challenged the guys to step up their game and they did tonight.” 

Henry Flugstad-Clarke, John Leisman and Nicky Downs all scored, and Justin Lobe, Ryan Matteo, Kyle Kenagy and Josh Totte added assists.

Saint Joseph’s scored first when Mike Stuski got his head on a Ted Foley cross in front at 11:42. Stuski’s shot deflected off the arm of a Yale defender and then the crossbar before trickling in.

Yale answered with a very pretty goal just over five minutes later. Matteo sent a wide ball to Lobe, who struck a cross toward the back post that Flugstad-Clarke neatly headed in.

Leisman gave the Bulldogs the lead with his third goal of the season came at 25:09. He settled a Kenagy pass and fired a shot through a screen and just inside the post.

Downs capped the scoring early in the second half with a similar shot. His came from 20 yards out and was set up by Totte.

That was more than enough for a Yale defense that limited the Hawks to very few quality scoring chances.

“In the past, we may find a way to not close out the game, but we did tonight and that's a very positive experience for this team to learn how to win and close out games,” Stannard said.

Yale finished with a 13-7 edge in shots.

Kees Schipper earned the victory in goal.

The Bulldogs play their final road game on Saturday at Brown at 7 p.m. before closing out the season back at Reese on Nov. 12 against Princeton at 4 p.m.

“We have two more games in the league and have an opportunity to climb the table and finish on a strong note,” Stannard said. “This is a prideful group and o expect us to keep working hard.”
