HS: Winter state, region rankings, Jan. 22
The top boys teams seem all tied up, while the elite girls are hitting their stride.
This past week, the current No. 1 boys teams in the California-North, California-South, Florida-North, Florida-South and West regions all were held to draws last week. Even the No. 2 teams in three regions were tied. But in every case, those teams remain undefeated. The most noteworthy boys move this week is Northwest Rankin (Miss.) jumping to No. 2 in the Southeast after defeating Madison Central (Miss.) in a battle of state title contenders. Madison Central had defeated Louisiana power St. Paul's (La.) recently. Mississippi teams now occupy the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 spots in the Southeast.
On the girls side, region No. 1 teams went 10-0-3 last week as all eight held their top ranking. There are two changes at state No. 1, however, with Monte Vista (Calif.) and JSerra (Calif.) swapping spots, and Perry (Ariz.) regaining the top position in Arizona.
