Rage Cage brings science, quality to goal manufacturing

Rage Cage brings science, quality to goal manufacturing
September 29, 2009
To say that Rage Cage sells goals would be like describing soccer as a leisurely jog around the pitch.

It’s both in-comprehensive, and not entirely accurate.

No, to completely understand the Rage Cage company and brand is to know the ambition behind it. It’s to realize the years of research and study; the mini failures and successes, and the journey towards finding something truly original. There is no shortage of goal manufacturers on the market, but this Maryland-based company doesn’t simply make goals - it produces invention.

“I’ve run marathons that were easy compared to what I do now,” said Rage Cage founder and President Frank Reeves. “I like to call our company a science project. There is the potential to truly change what someone can get in terms of a collapsible goal and we’re working towards that.”

And what magnificent work Reeves and his company are creating.

Launched in 1999, Rage Cage began as a lacrosse goal manufacturer. A former lacrosse player himself, Reeves saw the need for a quality transportable goal that would offer both performance and convenience. He recalls showing up at local Maryland parks with his brother only to find what he describes as “trash can-sized holes with a net.”

Determined to create a solution, Reeves headed to his father’s woodworking shop with the intent of creating a new prototype. It was during this four-year learning period of talking to engineers, sending it to universities and working ardently towards finding a manufacturer that the true character of Rage Cage was developed.

Rage Cage is built on quality and cutting edge technology, and the work that goes into the development of its goals is what separates it from its competitors.

“The early times were challenging, but what I learned in meeting with experts and scientist was priceless,” Reeves said. “When you’re a high-tech company it’s about getting the education and putting it to use. During the process I was fortunate enough to have Steve Walker, who invented the world’s first firewall software, as my advisor. I always saw the potential but I didn’t know how to get there and he helped me direct my business.”

Rage Cage soon branched into hockey goals, and most recently soccer, and now has 300 distributors nationwide and exports to seven countries.

Between the three sports, Rage Cage offers more than 10 goal-models and countless other accessories and parts.

There is no product more on the cutting edge, however, than the company’s new soccer goal - the SG800. This groundbreaking goal has been in research and development for three years back and forth between Taiwan. Utilizing Rage Cage joint technology and motion dampening air shocks, the SG800 folds down into the center in a way that makes it one-of-a-kind. It’s incredibly durable, and is equipped for beach, urban, adult indoor or youth games.

It’s just another invention by a company founded on dogged research and lofty invention.

“Two qualities I’ve always had, is I’m determined and have a vivid imagination,” Reeves said. “I think both of those traits are exercised here. If you’re not determined or don’t have the willpower to make something special than why do it?”
