Sides from the Southeast and Southwest are set to duke it out in the 2010 age group.
Four teams from Southern California clinched spots at this week’s ECNL Boys National Finals, which begins on July 17 in Richmond, Virginia. Two teams from Georgia are among them as well as a New Jersey and Colorado squad.
San Diego Surf sit as slight favorites, though they are just one of several sides capable of winning it all.
Beach FC (CA)
A spot in Redmond was secured by Beach without scoring more than a single goal in all four games. Goalkeepers Christian Hess and Colton Miller were handy in that regard, and will need to step up again. Collin Lawrence and Liam Rees were two of the most dangerous attackers, while defenders like Julian Martinez and David Unatin are key at the back. Asher Moore buzzes around the midfield as well.
NTH Nasa
Nasa bounced back from an opening-game group defeat to spin off three straight wins to progress to Virginia. Eduardo Dias, Jack Reyes, Rani Shara and Josh Potier are some of the names to know.
Legends FC
The Southwest Conference champs backed up a strong regular season with an impressive shift at playoffs. After winning all three group games without conceding a goal, they saw off a quality Albion Hurricanes FC team. Jacob Galarza and Kingston Rojas were among the goals, offering a final third punch that will be crucial. Goalkeeper Richard Baltazar had a big showing in the Pacific Northwest, and his ability to replicate that is going to be crucial.
Albion SC Colorado
Out at the ECNL Playoffs, Albion showed that they can win close games. All four of the team’s wins in playoff action came by a single goal. That kind of mentality is going to help lay the foundation for a strong performance out in Virginia. Cade Holley typically plays in central midfield, helping to contain the opposition or get his team going in the final third. Matthew Garcia offers a goal threat from wide areas or up front.
STA
The depth and talent of boys soccer in New Jersey will be on display as STA seeks to continue its run. Cortland Martin is one of the top talents from the state outside a professional setup or MLS NEXT. He can run the show and make a big contribution here.
Concorde Fire Platinum
Speaking of talent bases, Concorde Fire Platinum’s 2010 team is one that can be difficult to match. They breezed through the playoffs, winning all four games by a margin of 18-4. Jonathan Batres-Gutierrez runs the show in midfield, and if he stays locked in it will lay the foundation for the likes of Floyd Cline and Caleb Etheredge to knife forward and cause problems.
Rebels SC
A few of the top clubs on display in the younger age groups was Rebels, which featured talented players competing hard while playing a good brand of soccer. An all-So Cal battle looms in the quarterfinals when Rebels face a good San Diego Surf squad. Prince Demunga is a key player in defense, while Cristiano Ortega and Ricardo Fernandez offer quality. Garrett Ruiz is a wide forward who can create problems from the wide areas.
San Diego Surf
This week’s quarterfinal against Rebels is the third time the two teams will meet in ECNL action. Surf won one of those 1-0, and the other was a 1-1 draw. Adriel Duarte is set to get his final run before moving to the LAFC Academy later this year. Aidan Tassviri thrives as a chance creator in the final third. Colton Wuchner patrols the midfield, while Garrett Conway’s athleticism provides cover wherever he’s needed. This squad won the national title in 2023 and were national semifinalists last year.
