Arsenal Ladies sign Stanford star Ubogagu
Stanford women's soccer standout Chioma Ubogagu has signed a professional contract with Arsenal Ladies, the club announced today.
Ubogagu, a United States youth international who won the 2012 Under 20 Women's World Cup, joins the London outfit after making 87 appearances for the Pac-12 program, scoring 27 goals and notching 37 assists.
“Chioma is a player I have known about from my time coaching in the United States and she is a fantastic talent," Manager Pedro Martinez Losa told arsenal.com. "She is very creative, and is able to make goals as well as score them. I think that she will fit in very well with us."
During her career at Stanford, Ubogagu was a part of the 2011 national championship-winning side, and was team captain last fall as the Cardinal returned to the College Cup, where it lost in the national semifinal to the eventual champs Florida State. She was recently drafted by Sky Blue FC with the first pick of the fourth round (No. 28 overall) in the 2015 NWSL College Draft.
The move to London marks a return home of sorts, as Ubogagu was born in London before moving to Coppel, Texas at the age of three. Arsenal kicks off the FA Women's Super League season on April 2 against Notts County Ladies.
