Boston College Tops No. 9 Wake Forest, 1-0

Sophomore McKenzie Meehan notched the lone goal to lead Boston College past No. 9 Wake Forest, 1-0, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in front of 621 fans on Thursday night at the Newton Soccer Field.

BC is now 5-5-0 overall and improved to 2-3 in the ACC, while Wake Forest is now 7-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.

“I feel we have played this well a lot this year and it was nice to dictate the much of the play on a Top 10 team and walk away with a win,’’ said BC Head Coach Alison Foley.

Meehan scored in the 23rd minute of play to give BC the 1-0 lead. Meehan ran onto a ball sent into the box by sophomore defender Lauren Bernard. Meehan had two defenders closing in on her and just got her foot on the ball and slid it near post by Wake Forest goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe (eight saves).

It was Meehan’s team-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season and seventh overall.

BC had a great chance before the strike by Meehan. Senior Patrice Vettori had a header from seven yards out, go near post. Bledsoe made a diving save as she stuck her arm out to push the ball wide in the 32nd minute.

Stephanie McCaffrey, who had three shots in the game, had an opportunity in the 20th minute from just outside the box but Bledsoe handled the shot easily.

Just five minutes into the second half, McCaffrey had a chance from inside the box to the left of Bledsoe. McCaffrey went near post but Bledsoe was there for the save.

BC’s Rachel Davitt broke through the Wake Forest defense in the 69th minute. The junior picked up full speed and put a toe on the ball, and then collided with BlWomen’s Soccer Tops No. 9 Wake Forest, 1-0
