NEW BRITAIN, CT – The Iona College women's soccer team lost to Central Connecticut 4-0 on Thursday night. The Blue Devils out-shot the Gaels 19-3, with nine of their shots on goal.
Iona and CCSU played a back-and-forth first half, for the most part. Each side had early chances with corner kicks, but neither team could put a shot on net. The first shot of the game came from CCSU just under 20 minutes into the match. The Blue Devils would get two more shots off, forcing Emma Havrillato make a save on one of them, before freshman Samantha Hogan got the Maroon & Gold in the shot column.
Roma McLaughlin would find the back of the cage for the third time this season in the 38thminute to break the scoreless tie. The Gael offense couldn't procure another shot for the remainder of the half.
Junior Angelina DeCicco started the second half for Iona; she allowed a goal just over two minutes into her tenure, making it a 2-0 deficit for the Gaels. CCSU proceeded to get four more shots off in a four-minute span, though none of them were on net.
DeCicco made a save on a header in the 62ndminute, then made two more saves in a one-minute span just a few minutes later.
The Blue Devils would score two more times, in the 75thand 77thminute, to extend its lead to 4-0. The Gaels' third and final shot came off of the foot of Lisette Palomo on a free kick with just under three minutes left, but sailed too high. Iona fell to 1-4-0 on the season with the loss.
Iona will welcome NJIT to Mazzella Field on Sunday to wrap up the third week of the season. Kick-off is set for noon and the game will be broadcasted on Iona Insider.
