BLACKSBURG, Va. - SIUE knocked off its first nationally-ranked team of the season and won the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational with a 1-0 victory Sunday over No. 19 James Madison.

The Cougars begin the 2012 season at 2-0. It is the first time SIUE has won its first two contests since the 2004 season.

Jared Tejada scored the game-winning goal at the 34:39 mark, his second score in as many games. Tejada was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for his efforts. He was joined on the All-Tournament team by sophomore Matt Polster, seniorRyan Bauer, and senior Kevin Stoll.

"We are very pleased to be able to win the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish. "The team had two solid performances against some quality competition in Virginia Tech and James Madison."

Kalish said it was a challenging game for SIUE as they were not able to get into a rhythm and get on the ball as much they usually prefer.

"With that said, the players adapted and did a great job of dealing with their long service and matching their fight." said Kalish.

SIUE's goal was created by Jordan Barnes and Joe Sales, who were both credited with assists, on the left flank. Their possession and combination set up Tejada just in front James Madison goalkeeper Colin Newcity.

"It was a good sequence by Barney and Joe. Joe's delivery was spot on, and Jared timed his run very well," said Kalish.

John Berner collected his first collegiate shutout. He finished with three saves.

The Cougars continue on the road next weekend with games at Omaha, Neb., at the Ameritas Classic. SIUE takes on Rutgers Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 10th-ranked Akron Sunday at noon.
