Creighton University vs. St. Mary's (CA)
In its second game on a two game road trip, the number 3 ranked Creighton Bluejays posted a second consecutive 1-0 shutout of a strong California school. In doing this, Creighton continued an unbeaten streak against California teams to 18 games.
St. Mary’s proved to be a rugged and difficult opponent for Creighton and actually outshot the Jays over the course of the game 7-6. The midfields battled and the scoring opportunities were few and far between. When St. Mary’s played in Omaha last fall the game was played the same way. St. Mary’s is very athletic and aggressive and broke up plays before they began.
Creighton’s lone goal and the game winner came in the 47th minute when Jose Ribas headed a long pass from freshman Timo Pitter off the bottom of the cross bar and into the goal.
As in many closely contested games, when the home team goes down a goal the match turns physical and in this case five yellow cards were given in the second half. Both teams played hard and physical in an intense second half.
In the end Creighton pulled out a win and travel back to Omaha 2-0 on the weekend and face Old Dominion and William & Mary next weekend in the Creighton Invitational at Morrison Stadium.
