The Albertus Magnus men’s soccer team picked up its first loss of the 2012 season as Mount Saint Mary College(N.Y.) defeated the Falcons 2-1 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Falcons move to 2-1 on the year, while the Knights evened their record to 2-2.

For the second-straight game, the Falcons trailed at the half 1-0 as the Knights took an early lead in 16th minute on a Sean Miyaki goal. Before Miyaki chipped in his first goal of the season, he received the ball from Alex Tolman, who deflected a pass in his direction.

With a 1-0 lead at the break, the Knights also held a 9-7 shot advantage.

Albertus tied the contest in the 51st minute as the Falcons’ Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) and Lindsey Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) perfected the give-and-go with Barrett scoring his first goal of the season. Barrett found Zapata at the top of the box and sprint past two defenders to one-time Zapata’s pass right by the hands of the Mount Saint Mary keeper. For Zapata, it was his team-leading second assist of the season.

The Knights scored the winning goal in the 70th minute of play as Sean Lockwood dribbled down the field into the box and dished off a pass to his right where he found Sean Barton who connected for his first goal of the year.

With just over 10 minutes to go in the contest, the Falcons earned a penalty kick due to a handball called in the box. Stephen Zapata took the kick but the Knights’ Matt Darling made a diving save to preserve his team’s lead.

Albertus outshot the Knights 17-15 on the night, including a 10-6 clip in the second half.

Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) made six stops in net for the Falcons, while he allowed two goals. Darling recorded eight saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work for the Knights.

Albertus will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 8 when the Falcons open league play with a home contest against Mount Ida. The Mustangs are 0-1-1 and will face the Falcons in a 1:00 p.m. match-up.
