Green Bay men beat Milwaukee
November 3, 2009
GREEN BAY, Wis. (Oct. 31, 2009) - JC Banks scored his league-leading 12th goal of the season and assisted the other to lead the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team on a cold Saturday night at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix (12-2-2, 5-2-0 Horizon) gained the early momentum on Banks' 14th-minute goal before adding another in the second half to keep possession of the Chancellor's Cup in the yearly showdown with the Panthers (3-11-2, 2-4-2 Horizon).
"Green Bay is a very good team," UWM head coach Jon Coleman said. "We made some mistakes and they capitalized on them. And good teams are going to do that. And, down the stretch here, we need to limit our mistakes. We didn't do ourselves any favors from the start. They got an early goal and we were chasing the game."
The first half was played fairly even, with the UWM defense thwarting numerous Phoenix attacks while generating a few opportunities of their own. Both teams put together stretches of quality possession, but the soggy field - the game had been postponed from Friday due to rain in the area - definitely had an affect on the quality of play.
Shots ended even at 6-to-6 in the first 45 minutes, with junior Robert Refai nearly tying the contest in the 19th minute, only to see GB's Lucas Kemmesies knock his shot off the line at the near post.
Juniors Greg Rosenthal and Peter Sanger also set up Refai with a pair of quality passes in the 43rd minute inside the six-yard box, but he was not able to get enough on the shot and Ryan Wehking was able to come up with the save to keep it 1-0 at the time.
For the game, Green Bay used a strong second half to accumulate a 17-to-9 lead in shots (5-to-3 in shots on goal) and an 8-to-4 advantage in corner kicks. Refai led the UWM offense with a game-high four shots, while Rosenthal recorded three. UWM was whistled for 16 of the 31 fouls in the match.
The Panthers close out the regular season with a final home match, welcoming the Wisconsin Badgers to Engelmann Field Nov. 5 for a 7 p.m. start.
