Mustangs Tab Spot in 2016 NCAA Tournament

November 7, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU/NCAA) – The SMU women's soccer team received an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship, the NCAA announced Monday.

The Mustangs (13-6-2, 6-2-1 AAC) will play at [RV] Oklahoma (13-6-2, 4-3-1 Big 12) in the first round, at the OU Soccer Complex in Norman, Okla. The game is slated for Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale online at 9 a.m. CT Tuesday and can also be purchased at the field prior to the start of the match. Tickets are $10 for the general public. For online orders, tickets will be print-at-home, or fans may visit the OU Athletics Ticket Office to receive hard copies of their tickets.

"We're excited to get the opportunity to continue play," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "When you have a team like ours that is so close knit, they want to stay together and keep playing."

SMU finished second in the American Athletic Conference, advancing to its first conference championship match since 2004. The Mustangs used a 12-5-1 record to finish third in the regular season. SMU currently has 13 wins, the most since 2006.

"We can't just be happy to be there," Petrucelli added. "We have to have an attitude and take an attitude of 'we're going to compete as hard as we can' and hopefully advance. It has to be more than just showing up and enjoying the fact that we are in it, we have to go and really compete against a – from what I know – very good Oklahoma team."

Oklahoma fell to No. 1 West Virginia, 2-0, in the Big 12 Championship semifinals after finishing fourth in the regular season. The Mustangs will meet for the Sooners for the ninth time in program history. SMU holds a 5-2-1 all-time advantage over Oklahoma.

This is SMU's 13th trip to the NCAA tournament all-time, and its first NCAA appearance since 2006.
