ODU BATTLES NO. 8 MARYLAND TO A 1-1 TIE
COLLEGE PARK, MD— The ODU Soccer Monarchs battled eighth ranked Maryland to a 1-1 double overtime tie Tuesday night before a crowd of 1,928 at Ludwig Field. This was the Monarchs second overtime with a top 10 opponent.
“Anytime you can come into a hostile environment and get a result, you have to feel very, very good,”
Said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. “This is one of the most difficult places to play. Our guys worked
Very hard and they should feel very good about themselves as we prepare to play our first C-USA match at Tulsa this weekend.”
After almost 74 scoreless minutes, ODU broke into the scoring column on an OWN goal off a corner by Geoffrey Hill which deflected off a Terps player into the net.
Maryland tied the match with 7:09 left when David Kabelik scored on assists from Jake Pace and Sunny Jane.
Maryland outshot the Monarchs, 23-10 overall, but ODU had more shots on goals, 8-7. The Monarchs senior goalkeeper Sean Stowe came up with a career high six saves, while Maryland’s Zack Steffen made seven.
The Monarchs took then number one Creighton to overtime, before losing, 2-1 in double overtime, back on Sept. 13.
ODU begins Conference USA play this Saturday night when they travel to 15th ranked Tulsa.
