PUEBLO, Colo. – The Angelo State soccer team concluded its non-conference regular season schedule on Sunday with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Adams State at the CSU-Pueblo Classic.
The loss drops the Rambelles to 1-3 on the season, with two of the three losses being one-goal decisions. Brandie DeBacker, who had 12 shots in the match, scored Rambelles' only goal of the game for the second time this season. Jessica Hellweg scored both Adams State (3-1) goals, including the game winner in the 106th minute of play off an assist from Whitney Smith and the first goal on a penalty kick.
ASU finished the CSU-Pueblo Classic with a 0-2 record after a 2-0 loss on Friday to the host Thunderwolves.
“We had 42 shots and we scored one goal,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said of the weekend road trip. “I'm disappointed. I think the way we are trying to play is good, but we can't be satisfied without getting the result. I'm sure the players are disappointed in making this trip and only getting a lesson out of it. We have to move forward and get results.”
Angelo State opens its Lone Star Conference schedule at 7 p.m. on Friday at Midwestern State and at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Abilene Christian. Midwestern State (2-0-1) is the preseason selection to win the conference this season, while ACU (4-0) was slated second. The Rambelles were picked to finish third.
“We need to bring together everything we worked on in preseason and come together as a team,” DeBacker said. “We have to know our strengths and weaknesses. It's going to be a completely different game in conference. We have to get results.”
Hanna Horeis added three shots in the Rambelles' effort, while Katie Camlin, Megan Schaffer and Lauren Carnes each had two shots in the match.
"I think this week we need to work hard and really focus in on finishing," Camlin said. "I think that was the main problem. We had a lot of shots on goal today and worked hard on and off the ball, but I feel that we got real unlucky with our shots."
Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Cardinal started her second straight match, and third overall, for the Rambelles. Cardinal finished with four saves and faced 15 shots against Adams State.
DeBacker's goal takes her career total to 28 at Angelo State. Her next goal with tie her with Sheri Champlin for second all-time in the ASU record books.
