WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 10 Fort Lewis (Colo.) did nothing to disprove its ranking Friday night in the season opening MSU Classic.

Sophomore forward Sam Weiss scored two goals and assisted on the other as the Skyhawks rolled to a 3-0 win over the Mustangs at the MSU Soccer Field.

The classic closes with a pair of matches on Sunday as Texas A&M-Commerce squares off with Fort Lewis at 11 a.m. followed by MSU taking on Colorado Mesa at 1 p.m.

"Fort Lewis is a really good team," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "They are well coached and played very well. I felt like our inexperienced showed as our touch was off and work rate was down. That really hurt us tonight."

Midwestern managed just three shots including two on frame by juniors Mickey Brown and Emily Saville, but none threatened a pair of Skyhawk keepers as Caitlyn Espinosa and Amando Raso combined for the shutout.

Weiss tallied goals in the 14th and 81st minutes and assisted on Emma Cannis' tally in the 42nd minute as FLC peppered MSU keeper Mallory Whitworth with 17 shots including five on goal.

"I was very proud of Mallory," Trimble said. "She made three one-on-one saves as we were scrambling and they were able stay in their structure. Hopefully we can grow from this and get a better result on Sunday."

MSU's next opponent, Colorado Mesa, battled West Texas A&M to a 3-3 draw led by Sarah Pope's two-goal performance. WT's Leslie Briggs notched a hat trick to account for each of the Lady Buffs' scores.
