October 23, 2010
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer earned their second win of the 2010 Western Athletic Conference season against Utah State Friday night. Senior Claudia Cardenas scored the game-winning goal giving the Bulldogs the win over the first place Aggies. The `Dogs have an overall mark of 6-8-2 and 2-3 in WAC play.

"Absolutely thrilled for the team," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "This is the first complete game we've played and it came against one of the best teams in the WAC. We played both sides of ball really well. Several players played above themselves. Tonight's outcome is what our players deserve and certainly our fans. Everything rolled together and we got our first home win."

The `Dogs possessed the ball and maintained control of the ball for the first 15 minutes of the match.

Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel made a beautiful save right out of the gate. The senior punched an Aggie shot up, which then hit the post and a Bulldog defender cleared the ball. Revel finished the first half with five saves.

The Bulldogs had some close shots on goal in the first half. Freshman Tara Boynton played a ball to Bradlee DeShane. DeShane took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that sailed high.

Another close attempt came when Kendall VanDine crossed the ball to Boynton. Boynton put pressure on the goalkeeper in an attempt to shot, but Molli Merril came up with the ball.

At halftime the game was scoreless and tied 0-0. Utah State outscored Fresno State 9-6 in the first 45 minutes of the match.

The Bulldogs continued to dominate the possession into the second half of the match. In the first 25 minutes of the second half the `Dogs outshot the Aggies 6-4.

The midfield worked hard making offensive attacks for Fresno State. The four on the middle line delivered crossed after cross into the 18-yard box.

In the 82nd minute of the game the Bulldogs earned a corner kick. Lauren Lindstrom and Bradlee DeShane each rifled off shots, but where wither blocked or deflected. Cardenas capitalized on the missed shots with a kick over her head into the goal giving Fresno State the lead 1-0.

"Her goal is one that you dream of," said Zwaschka. "Those opportunities don't happen frequently and for her to not only execute the kick, but for it to go into the goal is an absolute dream come true. For it to be the game-winner on top of that is exciting. "

Revel ended the game with six saves and her fourth shutout of the season. Junior Vanessa Gonzalez led the team in shots with four and the Bulldogs recorded a total of 16 shots against the Aggies.

The Bulldogs play their last game at home for the season on Sunday, Oct. 24 against Nevada. Fresno State will celebrate senior day with 10 Bulldog seniors. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and admission is free.

"Sunday will be quite a contrast from last year and only having one senior," said Zwaschka. "So, to go from one to 10 it is probably going to be a pretty emotional day. It's going to be an exciting day to celebrate the senior's careers."
