Marist men beat Delaware

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s soccer team opened the 2009 regular season with a convincing 1-0 win at the hands of the Delaware Blue Hens before a crowd of 1,087. Marist had a strong evening on both offense and defense. The Red Foxes outshot the Blue Hens 19-4, and allowed just one Delaware shot on goal.
Junior Steven Morales (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the game in the 78th minute off a shot by Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) which was deflected by a Delaware defender. Morales scored his second career goal Tuesday night, and Brossard notched his first collegiate point.
Defensively, red-shirt junior goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) pitched a shutout in his first career game with the Red Foxes. He made one save in the 11th minute off a Ben Rodkey shot.
As a team Marist (1-0) held the advantage in corner kicks 8-1. The Red Foxes held the same advantage in shots on goal, and committed seven fouls to Delaware’s 11.
Marist will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 4 when they play host to the Hartwick Hawks. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The match will be broadcast live on GoRedFoxes.com by Mike Haase and Frank Lombardy. They will go on the air at 6:45 p.m.
