Upsets from the first round included UNC Wilmington’s 2-0 defeat of South Carolina, Loyola Marymount beating California 1-0 and Florida Gulf Coast winning 2-1 over in-state counterparts South Florida. The Eagles jumped into the Top 25 at No. 24.
The top ten teams in the rankings all saw off their respective challenges. Florida State eased past Evansville 3-0, Virginia saw off Howard 7-1, Stanford topped San Jose State 2-0, Penn State beat Albany 5-0 and Florida edged Western Michigan 1-0.
