TDS Women's Division I Top 25: Nov. 16
Upsets were at a minimum during the opening round of the women’s Division I NCAA Tournament.
Fifteen of the 16 seeded sides survived to the next weekend of play, reflected in this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 update.
One of the most exciting games of the opening cluster of action took place out west between USC and Cal State Fullerton. The Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Trojans roared back through Morgan Andrews’ pair of goals. Fullerton took the lead again, but Andrews finished off the hat trick to tie the game at 3-3. USC eventually managed to win on penalties, and remain at No. 19 in the rankings.
Upsets from the first round included UNC Wilmington’s 2-0 defeat of South Carolina, Loyola Marymount beating California 1-0 and Florida Gulf Coast(w) winning 2-1 over in-state counterparts South Florida. The Eagles jumped into the Top 25 at No. 24.
The top ten teams in the rankings all saw off their respective challenges. Florida State eased past Evansville 3-0, Virginia saw off Howard 7-1, Stanford topped San Jose State 2-0, Penn State beat Albany 5-0 and Florida edged Western Michigan 1-0.
