UC Irvine women defeats Riverside

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women’s soccer team (10-5-2, 3-2-1) defeated UC Riverside 2-1 in double overtime Sunday night in Big West action at Anteater Stadium.

Kristy Adcock had a breakaway in the 39th minute that was stopped by sophomore keeper Kala Gabler (Apple Valley/Hope International). The ball rebounded off Gabler to her right and Denise Thomas put it into the net giving UCR a 1-0 lead. The ‘Eaters were awarded a penalty kick following a Highlander foul inside the box in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Judy Christopher (Ontario/Upland HS) converted the kick to tie the match at 1-1. The two teams remained tied at 1-1 through the end of regulation and the first overtime period. Junior Tanya Taylor (Buena Park/Sunny Hills HS) got the ball at the beginning of the second overtime period and went to the top of the box where she knocked it towards the net and keeper Jessica White. White made the initial save, but the ball slipped through her hands and over the goal line giving the ‘Eaters the 2-1 victory at the 100:32 mark.

Gabler had two saves in her first career start for the ‘Eaters. White had six saves for the Highlanders.

The ‘Eaters next go on the road to play at Cal State Northridge Sunday in Big West play at 1:00 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
